Rubens just beat Marie-Michèle Gagnon (Lac-Etchemin, QC) by 0.04s to capture her second national title in as many days. Rubens finished with a two-run combined time of one minute 37.87 seconds.
“It’s amazing. I didn’t really expect it. I’m happy to keep the championship because there are some really strong slalom skiers here. It wasn’t easy today,” said Rubens, the winner of yesterday’s ladies DH.
“Definitely Combined is in my future next year I am going to try and do all four events a little more of all four events. This is a good way to end the year for confidence going into next year,”
Gagnon was second in 1:37.91 with Brigitte Acton (Mont-Tremblant, QC) third in 1:38.65 after first run leader Anna Goodman (Pointe Claire, QC) skied out in her second run.
“In slalom there’s Anna and Brigitte so I didn’t expect much today but we all know that anything can happen. Shona won today and she deserved it. She a good friend of mine so it’s fun to see a friend win,” said Gagnon.
“The course was just perfect. It was hard snow. I skied okay, not exceptional. I just didn’t attack as much as I wanted,” she said. “It’s great to ski at home in Quebec again. It’s very special to have friends and family here today,” she added.
The ladies switch to super-G and super combined tomorrow in Le Massif, QC.
The PGMC Provincial Dual Slalom, an “east vs. west” showdown with teams from Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and BC competing, takes place later tonight. (Results to be posted in tomorrow’s pres release.)
