CDN’S: Janyk celebrates 27th birthday with slalom title

Britt and Michael Janyk win Pontiac GMC Canadian Championship titles on same day

MONT-SAINTE-ANNE, QC (March 22, 2009) Michael Janyk (Whistler, BC), the 2009 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships slalom bronze medalist, celebrated his 27th birthday today by winning the Pontiac GMC Canadian men’s slalom championship in Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC.

Jaynk did it on the same day his sister Britt won her 11th Pontiac GMC Canadian championship, winning the ladies national super-G title at nearby Le Massif, QC.

“I haven’t won a Canadian Championship in a few years,” said Janyk, the 2006 Pontiac GMC Canadian slalom champion. “Any time you can win a race, especially at the Canadian Championships it’s a great day.”

Janyk finished with a winning two-run combined time of one minute 52.68 seconds.

“The second run was a lot tougher today. We had spring conditions so going 30th it was a challenge,” added Janyk, the first run leader. “It worked out and I am happy with the result.”

Trevor White (Calgary, AB) wasn’t far off of Janyk’s time, placing second in 1:52.81.

“It’s a deceivingly tough hill. There is a lot of terrain. It’s a really tough set with a lot of rhythm changes so it was hard to stay ahead of the course,” said White, who will race in the giant slalom tomorrow before completing the season with training camps in Panorama and Whistler, BC.

White said Janyk is talented skier who requires two great runs to beat.

“Mike is such a solid skier that even when he is not skiing great he is still fast. You have to be aggressive and take a lot of risk. I did that today and I was close, just didn’t quite have it,” he said.

Patrick Biggs (Orleans, ON) finished third in a time of 1:53.65.

White was also part of an Alberta team that won the provincial dual under the lights in Mont-Sainte-Anne last night. His teammates on the winning team were Michael Mackie (Canmore, AB), Shona Rubens (Canmore, AB), Stephanie Irwin (Calgary, AB), Erik Read (Calgary, AB), Trevor Philp (Calgary, AB), Tatum Monod (Banff, AB), Victoria Michalik (Calgary, AB). The team was presented with the first place trophy by world downhill champion, and proud Albertan, John Kucera (Calgary, AB).

Tomorrow’s giant slalom is the final men’s event of the Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships.
