Kucera, the first run leader, finished with a two-run combined time of two minutes 08.63 seconds.
“I haven’t been on my GS skies since the World Cup race in Kranjska Gora, which was a few weeks ago, so in the first run I had a little trouble with timing,” said the 24-year-old world downhill champion. “I had a better feel in the second run and had more speed. I felt a little better about it, even though JP got me by 0.02s (in the second run).”
Kucera last won the national GS title in 2006.
“This is my eighth title and I have won everything but slalom so I have to feel good about that,” Kucera said.
“The Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships are a showcase for the sport in Canada and it shows the young guys how far they have to raise their game. These are important races if you want to keep on top against the best in the world,” he added.
Roy, the 25th ranked giant slalom skier in the world, finished second today in a time of 2:09.09 with American Warner Nickerson third in 2:10.32.
The men’s Pontiac GMC Cup title was also awarded today to BC’s Benjamin Thomsen (Invermere, BC), a repeat champion from last year. The Pontiac GMC Cup is a developmental ski racing program that is sanctioned by Alpine Canada Alpin and the International Ski Federation.
The title sponsor of the race series, Pontiac GMC, is celebrating 40 years since it began providing amateur ski racers in Canada with essential competitive experience this season.
The Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships conclude tomorrow with the ladies GS.
